| Jonathan Rose Companies was recently selected by the City of Newark to prepare a Master Plan for the City that will guide and shift the City forward to 2025, the target horizon year. The Master Plan will be centered on a vision of leveraging and driving regional economic growth, creating healthy and safe neighborhoods; and building a sustainable city.
The City of Newark represents the challenges and opportunities faced by many of today’s American post-industrial cities in an era of climate change. Having lost some its core qualities over the past few decades, Newark is now burdened with various negative community wellness indicators and environmental qualities such as noise, pollution and congestion that plague several of its neighborhoods. However, unlike many weak market cities, Newark has a rich cultural and social history from which to draw. The city also benefits from major infrastructure systems, and is directly linked to the broader regional economy, amenities and marketplace via regional transit and road transportation systems to New York City and the surrounding region.
Supported by a deep team of planners, designers, economists, and community organizers, Jonathan Rose Companies is leading the master planning process to establish the groundwork for sustainable development patterns that will allow Newark to be resilient and prosperous in the modern era. Our team will define sustainable development in the master plan and throughout the planning process, as development that incentivizes smart growth and green development patterns, the preservation and promotion of cultural and community values, the conservation and enhancement of the natural and built environment, and the establishment of good governance.
